Wealth managers can automate portfolio rebalancing, speed up reporting, and route client communications so advisers spend less time in spreadsheets and more time in meetings. That’s useful. It’s the same logic operations people have used for years: when the inputs are predictable and the rules are clear, automation pays for itself.
But the leap from “less grunt work” to “better outcomes” is where the article starts coasting. That translation is not automatic.
AI models are only as good as the data feeding them. If client records are messy, risk tolerances are inconsistently recorded, or transaction histories are incomplete, an “AI advantage” becomes algorithmic polish on fractured information. You don’t get sharper insight; you get faster output. Worse, clients can end up with standardized recommendations dressed up as personalization. The FT piece nods to efficiency but skims past that risk.
Here’s what nobody tells you: the most dangerous failures aren’t single bad calls, they’re systematic errors. When one dodgy model assumption ripples across dozens or hundreds of portfolios, the damage is concentrated and very visible. Wealth managers will point to oversight layers and “human-in-the-loop” controls. On paper, that sounds comforting.
In high-volume reality, humans either become bottlenecks or rubber stamps.
Once volumes spike, the business pressure is to trust the model unless something looks obviously insane. That bias towards acceptance turns small flaws into large ones. You get exactly what the article celebrates — speed and scale — just applied to mistakes.
This feeds directly into fees and trust, which the FT piece gestures at without really digging in. If AI lets firms claim scale, they can justify lower adviser headcount or different pricing. Clients might pay less. Or they might pay the same for a thinner human experience propped up by a shiny tech narrative. That’s the real question: who captures the efficiency?

But only when the humans change their behaviour.
Advisers who built careers on one-on-one trust now have to interpret model outputs, challenge them, and communicate uncertainty without spooking clients. That’s a different job description. Some will lean in and treat the model as a colleague to argue with. Others will quietly defer to the algorithm because it’s faster and clients assume machines are neutral and correct. Once that deference sets in, “better advice” can collapse into whatever the vendor’s default settings say.
Spare me the claim that technology is neutral here. Wealth management decisions touch retirement timing, risk exposure, tax paths — the core of someone’s financial life. If an AI fed on historical patterns reinforces past prejudices or favours certain wealth trajectories, you get institutionalised disadvantage wrapped in the language of objectivity. That’s not just a compliance headache; it’s reputational dynamite when clients realise the patterns.
There’s also a cultural question the article sidesteps: what happens to the craft of advice? The more the stack leans on AI, the more junior staff learn to manage tools instead of learning to think in first principles. Over time, that hollows out the bench. You don’t notice the loss in a bull market when everything trends up. You notice it when the assumptions break and nobody remembers how to challenge them from scratch.
So what should readers actually take from the FT’s framing that AI will work “in favour” of wealth managers? Treat it as a directional bet, not a settled fact. The real winners will be the dull, disciplined firms that pair their models with clean data, tight governance, and advisers trained to interrogate outputs — not the ones racing to slap an AI badge on existing processes and declare victory.
Wake up: in a few years, the real competitive divide won’t be between wealth managers who use AI and those who don’t, but between those who can explain and adjust their models under stress and those who can only repeat the sales deck that got them into this mess.
