Because in wealth management, “strategy” isn’t neutral jargon. It sits on top of clients’ life savings, their kids’ tuition, their retirement dates. Trust is the product. Trust that advice isn’t a routed product. Trust that fee schedules reflect value delivered, not cost recovery for a new platform dressed up as innovation.
Generative AI can already automate portfolio notes, draft client communications, even sketch tax ideas that look impressively bespoke. Nice. But who writes the monitoring rules? Who owns the model? Who bears the liability when a recommendation rests on an opaque output the adviser can’t fully unpack?

Any serious adoption requires rules — model validation, audit trails, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, and explicit ownership of outputs. If an adviser can’t explain how a recommendation was generated, regulators will eventually ask why any client should trust it.
EY points hard at opportunity; it should be just as loud about the frameworks that keep that opportunity from blowing back. Not just policies on a slide, but concrete controls: who signs off on changes to prompts, who approves training data sources, who has authority to hit the kill switch when outputs start drifting.
There’s also a competitive angle the article skates past: scale favors big firms. The largest platforms can hire machine learning teams, lock in long-term vendor deals, and build proprietary tooling.
