So yes, democratize decisions — and match that with democratized oversight: audit trails that non-engineers can read, rollback mechanisms that ops can execute in minutes, and incident reviews that pull in product, finance, and compliance, not just engineers cleaning up their own code.

The cio.com article casts this as a tool choice for executives. It’s bigger than that. Once you embed models into operations, you’re changing the company’s operating system. Pilots don’t just get better dashboards; they get autopilot modes with very specific behaviors, tuned by someone else’s objectives and assumptions. Airlines learned to pair autopilot with mandatory checklists, clear authority hierarchies, and black-box recorders for when things go wrong. Corporate AI isn’t special enough to skip that work.

If you’re an executive, treat operational AI less like a transformation program and more like air traffic control. You want three unglamorous changes: contractually require data lineage from vendors and internal teams, bake explainability criteria into deployment gates, and stand up cross-functional rapid-response groups that own incidents — not just the Jira tickets. Boards should stop asking only for dashboards and start asking to see runbooks. Dashboards show outcomes; runbooks show how power actually flows when the system moves.
