Calling AI accountability a “new currency” sounds punchy. But currency needs convertibility, and the Forbes piece treats PR signals like they’re already legal tender.

The claim that AI‑accountable leadership will be prized is directionally right. Investors, regulators, and employees are clearly less tolerant of “move fast and break things” when the thing breaking is, say, credit decisions or medical triage. Let’s be real, the cultural license for reckless tech experiments has narrowed.

The weak link is the leap from “valued” to “currency.” Currency implies a few basics: everyone agrees what it is, how to count it, and what it can buy. None of that exists for AI accountability.

Start with definitions. “Responsible AI” can mean publishing model cards, running bias tests, doing safety red-teaming, or just slapping a trust-and-safety slide in the investor deck. Companies can all claim “AI accountability” and still be doing wildly different things in practice. That’s branding, not balance sheet value.

The column assumes the market will sort this out and reward leaders who “walk the talk.” Maybe, eventually. Right now, it’s easier to sell the talk. Reputation behaves like a volatile asset: it trades at a premium right up until the scandal, then the bid disappears. Ask any firm that trumpeted ethics right before an AI misfire hit the press.

So who actually demands receipts instead of slogans?

Boards are the obvious starting point. They approve strategy, sign off on risk, and hire the very executives being praised as “AI-accountable.” But board literacy on algorithmic risk is uneven, and the Forbes piece glides past that. If your audit committee still treats AI as a glossy PowerPoint appendix, you’re not trading in a new currency — you’re gambling.

From my Goldman days, one lesson sticks: governance that matters shows up in artifacts. You either have risk assessments, model logs, and incident reports…or you don’t. People talked all the time about “risk culture”; the only thing that actually constrained behavior was checklists, signoffs, and the very real fear of being on the hook when something blew up.

The column nods at leaders being rewarded or punished, but doesn’t tackle the mechanics. Compensation is where this either becomes real or stays buzzword. If a CEO’s bonus is tied to growth and margin, and “AI accountability” lives in a separate, unaudited values statement, guess which one wins. Without hard links between pay and verifiable AI outcomes, you’re just printing your own Monopoly money.

There’s also an industry problem the article underplays. AI errors in healthcare are not the same as misfires in ad targeting. A single definition of “AI‑accountable leadership” stretched across hospitals, banks, and entertainment platforms collapses under its own vagueness. Yet the currency metaphor pretends everyone’s trading in the same unit.

Then you have regulatory arbitrage. Some jurisdictions are racing to define AI obligations; others are content with guidelines and cheerful self-reporting. Companies will inevitably cluster their riskiest deployments where enforcement is soft and still market “AI accountability” to investors and customers sitting under stricter regimes. That’s not a new currency; that’s cross-border storytelling.

The Forbes framing also sidesteps a basic question: who audits the auditors?

Independent AI assessments sound reassuring, but they inherit the same principal–agent tensions as financial audits. The firms being reviewed pay the reviewers. History here is not encouraging. Ratings agencies blessed complex securities until they didn’t. Corporate accountants signed off on aggressive assumptions until reality forced a restatement. Expecting AI assurance to behave differently without stronger oversight is optimistic.

There is a tempting parallel to draw with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings. Once ESG became investable, an entire ecosystem sprung up to “score” companies. The problem: no consistent methodology, wildly divergent ratings, and a lot of box‑ticking. ESG labeled itself as a new lens on value; plenty of it turned into elaborate disclosure theater. The risk for “AI‑accountable leadership” is that it repeats the pattern — high talk, low signal.

Even so, the column is onto something when it hints that even flawed framing can have catalytic effects. If executives believe their careers depend on being seen as AI‑accountable, they’ll at least start building the machinery: risk committees, internal audits, incident playbooks, and so on. Those can be strengthened over time.

But here’s the uncomfortable counter: early movers can capture the label without earning it. They get the halo, attract talent and capital, then drag their feet on actual standards. Once the market convinces itself those players are the benchmark, perception hardens faster than oversight.

The real buyers of this so‑called currency — investors, customers, counterparties, even employees — will have to be boring and demanding. Not just “Do you care about AI ethics?” but “Show me your incident logs, your impact assessments, your remediation record, and which leaders lost compensation when things went wrong.”

History suggests that’s where the line will be drawn. When accountability can be tied to documented failures and documented fixes — not glossy narratives — then it starts to trade like something with real value.

So yes, as Forbes argues, “AI‑accountable leadership” is a useful framing. The math doesn’t lie: whoever turns that phrase into audited practice first will set the reference rate everyone else quietly has to match.
